Willkommen auf Oktoberfest!

16 Sep 2009

It’s festival weekend at Porters!

The spring-time brings with it a fun and friendly atmosphere as the warm temps buoy everyone’s spirits. It’s such an enjoyable time to year to ski – you can sleep in, cruise up to the mountain, enjoy the warm temps and softer snow conditions, and be back in town in the evening well in time to enjoy a magnificent sunset over the alps.

Summit of T-3, thurs 17th September - (C) Katharina Klein

We’ll be up here enjoying the snow, you should come up and visit. Go on, it’s fun! Read on for the more information on this week’s activities and info from the mountain.

From the Mountain

There is still some fantastic skiing and riding to be had on the mountain.

Fun in the sun at Porters! 17th Sept 09 - (C) Katharina Klein

For the less experienced – Spring is the time for you to learn. Snow conditions are much more forgiving in September where the higher sun allows the snow to soften, making for a softer landing as you begin to master your turns! In addition, the air temperature is warmer, usually well above 0 degrees celcius, making for a more pleasant learning environment. The best time to be skiing is between 10am and 2pm. Take advantage of our highly qualified and friendly Snowsports School – they can help you to improve your technique in a fun and progressive environment.

SPECIAL DEAL – come to Porters mid-week (from Mon 21st Sept) to learn to ski or snowboard and you can purchase two beginners packages for the price of one, including rental, lesson and learner lift pass! See our ticket office for further details.

Bluff face still with heaps of snow, 17th sept - (C) Katharina Klein

For the more experienced – Spring is all about the corn… Spring snow corn that is, not corn on the cob! Fast, soft, slushy and fun, this snow is really great to ski. It is all about giving the sun a chance to soften up the snow. At Porters, there are several slopes which do so faster than others, so you can really work your way round. Big Mama is skiing well today (direct from chief snow tester, Uli Dinsenbacher), as is Solitude, the Leaper, and through McNulty’s Basin. Bluff Face is still a little firm today, although with a slightly higher freezing level tomorrow night, we expect that it too will soften with the sun by the weekend. Make the most of the fun weekend days on the snow while you still can.

You can also view a model of the proposed changes at the Porters Café when you’re next up to see us. If you do have a view and/or feedback on the proposal, we’d be happy to hear from you, just follow the links to the Porters Project Feedback form (link here) at our site. Porters Cafe extraordinaire, Yvonne, delivers the goods once again!

This weekend, on Sunday, you’ll notice something a little with the café staff, not to mention the food they have on offer. It’s Oktoberfest this Sunday, and to celebrate the German and Austrian roots of the ski area, plus the international flavour of our staff, German tastes are on offer. Mouth watering German sausage, baked pretzels, sauerkraut and German style potato salad will fill your belly, and you can wash it all down with a mug full of Beck’s beer served especially for you in a commemorative Porters Oktoberfest Mug! All this will cost you just $20 (you get to keep the mug!), or $10 for the plate of food only. We also have special edition Porters Okoberfest tees available from the ticket office.

Porters gliding to the top for recreational activities

8 Sep 2009

It's not just skiing that takes centre stage up at Porters, as visitors over the weekend found out. The Craigieburn Range on a good clear day makes for perfect gliding conditions, with gliders often utilising the updrafts to negotiate the range. It makes for spectacular viewing as the silent beasts come swooping in, worthwhile checking out. Thanks to Linda Inglis for the images below.

Additional recreational activities are something we here at Porters are looking to develop as the Porters Project gets underway. Let us know what activities you'd like to see available by providing you feedback on the project - if it's something we're able to work towards, we'll do our best!

Winter returns to Porters!

3 Sep 2009

After a period of warmer and at sometimes wild weather in the alps, cold temps, clear skies and fresh snow have once again returned to the alps. Solid frost action last night with temperatures getting down towards 7 below, consolidating the snow pack and delivering the goods with cold, winter snow on offer first thing Friday morning.

Uli is excited - the return to cold weather breathes new life into the winter and the skiing is at its best once again. Yesterday's report even got the mention 'you don't want to miss this one!' With clear and calm weather forecast through to Monday, this weekend is a 'DO-NOT-MISS'! The skiing and riding is epic right now with all runs open and fantastic snow.

Also joining us from Saturday through to Monday are orur friends from K2 and Line skis, giving you a chance to check out the latest 2010 models for yourself. Call in and see the crew at the base of T-1, they'll have a chat to you and offer up their advice for what will get you charging the slopes.

Hope to see you up at Porters this weekend for a fun time in the sun!

Porters News - 3rd Sept

3 Sep 2009

Spring has sprung – but no one told the snow gods! As we move into September and the sun sits higher in the sky, we can expect warmer days, and sun-soaked slopes.

We’ve had a few closed days last week due to the strong nor-west winds. The daffodils and blossoms are out on display across the countryside as the warmer temps stimulate growth. However, all is not lost as we did receive some fresh snow with those systems, and more over the past few days as well. The mountain is skiing great, and the cooler temps today are a hint of winter once again.

Read on for the latest news and events from Porters.

From the Mountain

No doubt that most of you have now caught up with the plans in place for the ‘Porters Project’. Exciting times for us and the Canterbury snow industry as Mike, Duncan and Simon, the Porters Directors, released plans for the upcoming changes to the ski area and the creation of a European style Alpine Village at its base.

Photo of the model which is now located in the Porters Cafe - check it out!

If you haven’t yet heard the news, you can read all about it via our website, and be sure to have a look at the project model that now sits in the Café on the mountain. We’d love for you to have a look and provide us with any feedback and comments you have.

As mentioned above, the skiing is awesome once again at Porters. We’ve received 20 cm of colder snow over the past 48 hours, and as Uli put it in this morning’s report, “Clear skies with light winds. Should be a fantastic day with lots of sun and windblown powder. All lifts will be going and all runs open. You don't want to miss this one!!”.
With clear, fine and frosty days forecast through to Sunday, it’s going to be an epic weekend in the mountains coming up. Make sure you come up and make the most of this fresh snow!

Porters Project - More Information

31 Aug 2009

Further information has now been made available about the Porters Project - to expand the existing ski area into the neighbouring area of Crystal Valley with main-trail snowmaking, and to establish a small, year-round resort village at the foot of the expanded ski area.

Canterbury ski-field plans $250m development

25 Aug 2009

A $250 million plan for Canterbury's second-biggest ski-field could see Christchurch rivalling Queenstown for the international ski-tourist dollar.

A consortium of New Zealand and Australian investors that bought the Porters Ski Area 2 1/2 years ago wants to build European-style accommodation for up to 3000 people at the foot of the mountain and expand the 700-hectare ski area into the adjoining Crystal Valley.

The plan, which could take 10 years to complete, would include more terrain for family and intermediate skiers.

The consortium proposes a gondola up to the slopes from a car park and resort at the base of the ski area, snowmaking on the main trails and a ski trail through regenerating native beech forest down to the village for skiers at the end of the day.

Blackfish - comprising the families of Christchurch investor and Porters Ski Area managing director Michael Sleigh and of Sydney businessmen Duncan Bull and Simon Harvey - wants the development to be environmentally acceptable.

Sleigh said skiers could drive on sealed roads from Christchurch to the car park, and from there get on the gondola.

Snowmaking was essential to attract tourists, he said. "If you are an Australian looking at a ski holiday, you want to know you will arrive and that skiing will be open."

The field, an hour's drive from Christchurch, employed 40 staff, he said, but the new resort would employ another 35 in permanent jobs and up to 400 in seasonal work.

He wanted the field to be as big as Mt Hutt, the region's biggest ski area, which sells five times as many lift passes as Porters.

"It would be great for Canterbury to have another big ski area," Sleigh said.

"New Zealand tourism, particularly winter tourism, has still got really good opportunities to grow in a global sense."

Ski-fields are having a record season because fewer Kiwis are going overseas for holidays and Australians are favouring New Zealand fields over their own.

Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism chief executive Christine Prince said having two large commercial ski-fields in the region would boost tourism.

"For us to be more competitive, to be offering more direct ski product against Queenstown, would be fantastic," she said.

"We have a far greater frequency of flights, we're cheaper and more accessible."

Destination Queenstown chief executive Stephen Pahl played down suggestions of rivalry with Canterbury.

"We've never taken the position that we're competing with anyone else," he said. "Queenstown holds a unique position in the ski market and I think we'll retain that."

Plans for what Sleigh called a small, carbon-neutral alpine village at Porter Heights hinge on a proposed land swap with the Department of Conservation (DOC).

Porters is on a perpetual lease from the department, but for accommodation to be built, investors will want the land to be freehold.

Blackfish proposes swapping 15ha adjoining the Lords Bush Scenic Reserve near Springfield for 21ha of DOC-owned land on the Porters access road.

Sleigh said the first step in the plan was to gain approval for the land acquisition and to get resource consents from the Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury.

"We hope to have that resolved fairly soon - a matter of months."

The village would operate year-round as a centre for other activities, such as tramping and mountainbiking.

Sleigh told the Canterbury-Aoraki Conservation Board last week that his company would set up an environmental restoration trust and assume financial and operational responsibility for restoring the former farmland near Lords Bush.

Sleigh told The Press he hoped work could start in two or three years.

"I think the proposition is compelling. With our increasing closeness with Australia, it's potentially not a bad time."

Redeveloping the ski-field would cost about $40m, while accommodation would be "much more", at a total of between $200m and $300m, he said.

With all the weather, we were lucky enough to get a top up of fresh snow overnight on Tuesday, receiving between 10 and 20cm falling on the ski area. Our snow safety team along with ski area management opted to remain closed on Wednesday while they assessed the snow-pack and the relative stability, especially in light of the new snow.

All well, we had no releases through the control work, and the ski area re-opened today. Our snow-safety team will continue to monitor the snow-pack to ensure that we’re safe when skiing and riding at Porters. Please respect all closures, they are closed with your best interests in mind.

Fresh snow over the past 24 hours, come on up for clear skies, light winds, and fantastic spring snow conditions!

Porters News - 13th August

13 Aug 2009

Well the weather continues to change. We seem to have had it all over the past week or so. After a fantastic weekend of skiing in warm soft spring snow with clear skies and light winds, we have had a couple of days of overcast weather, and now some fresh snow falling to top things up.

We’ve got a few things going on over the next couple of weeks, a few events, a family fun day thanks to our partners Toyota, and some fantastic skiing!

So read on for more and check out what’s happening at Porters.

From the Mountain

New snow has fallen! We have seen some interesting weather patterns over the past week or so, with some warmer temperatures and wind. But the current weather system has brought some fresh snow over the past 24 hours.

We’re at about the halfway mark in the season right now, and with an awesome snow-pack, we’re well set up for the weeks to come. The warmer temperatures have warmed the snow up, but it remains in great condition, skiing well as soft, spring snow at the moment.

Porter Park Crew sessioning a fun hit on Headwall in the warm, soft snow.

Last night and during the day, we have received around 10 to 15 cm of snow on the upper mountain, with less lower down. Hopefully the moisture is still around tonight when the temps are cooler and some more snow falls!

Our apologies regarding our webcams – we have had some technical issues for which we’ve had to source new parts. This has taken some time, and we hope that we’re able to have them back online as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Superb Spring Snow Conditions

12 Aug 2009

The snow is beginning to soften, and over the past few days with slightly warmer temperatures, we have had some fantastic skiing all over the mountain. The softer spring-like snow, is certainly more forgiving, and allows you to cut in a bit deeper with your turns.

Both the main faces, big mama and bluff face have been skiing very well, top to bottom, with forgiving snow and great turns. Now that the sun is a little hgher in the sky as winter progresses, it's also a little warmer in the main basin when the temperatures are cold, with better light on the beginner and intermediate areas.

Come on up for some superb spring-like skiing at Porters right now. It's looking a few weather windows over the next couple of days, so get out of town and come and see us!

Methven to Porters - a short and scenic drive

11 Aug 2009

It really is a beautiful drive through the Rakia Gorge and on through the scenic foot hills of the Southern Alps to Porters from the rural Mt Hutt village of Methven.

Please check the morning snow reports for further information.

Porters News - 7th August

6 Aug 2009

Hello Porters fans,

As we roll into August, we’ve seen a bit of a change in the weather systems that have been flowing through over the past two weeks. We’ve had a bit of a nor-west spell, which brought snow, wind, sunshine, warm, cold – the works really! Even though we’ve had some warmer temps in town, the snow conditions remain good, with cold winter wind packed snow, which has been skiing really well.

We have a number of events and activities coming over the coming weeks – watch this space! Check out the events calendar for more information, and come up and make the most of these fun days on the hill.

Read on for the latest from Porters…

From the Mountain

As mentioned, the skiing is great. With the wind, we have seen the snow moving around a fair bit, which has deposited fresh wind-blown snow in certain areas of the mountain. These areas feature the best skiing, Uli’s call in the report this morning is for Bluff Face as great skiing today.

Hilux at Sunrise - (C) Luke Armstrong

The access road is in great shape, no chains required today, which should be the same through the weekend. We still operate our complimentary mountain road shuttle from the chain fitting area for those who prefer not to drive the mountain road. This runs every day at 9:30am, with further trips running as booked prior to the day. Please contact us to book a pick up if you’re unsure.

We have some superb terrain for beginners and intermediates to practise and improve. With our ski-mat magic carpet lift, it's easy to get back to the top of our wide beginner area, and once this is mastered, we have the platter lift which offers a larger easy area for you to take it to the next level. If you're not sure, grab a package that includes a lesson with one of our fantastic instructors, it's the best value for you. Also ask about the Porters Passport -  it can get you a complimentary season pass for the rest of this year!

Our apologies regarding our webcams – we have had some technical issues for which we’ve had to source new parts. This has taken some time, although we’re almost there, and hope to have them back online as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

What a view to ChCh...

4 Aug 2009

It is a fact that many of you are all too familiar with - we are just over an hour away, the closest ski area to Christchurch City. Next time you're with us, head up T-2, or even at the top of T-3, you have a clear view down the Waimakariri river accross the plains to Christchurch.
Two Porters locals stoked on Saturday with the skiing.

We had a great day on Saturday. The forecast was for a bit of wind, but it eased off early morning, the groomers were able to get out on the hill from 4am, and worked hard to make things happen, with the top two t-bars open mid morning and some awesome skiing through the leaper, and headwall softening up with the sunshine that beamed down. There were also plenty of people enjoying the sun on the beginner 'ski-mat' area, instructors passing on their knowledge and expertise.

Porters Instructors can get you skiing and riding better than ever!

Quest Park Jam 1 Postponed

31 Jul 2009

The Quest community Park Jam is Postponed for today. We have gusty winds as well very firm conditions in the park due to strong winds over the past few days, making it difficult to run an event today. The next park jam date is 22/23rd Aug, followed by 5/6th Sept for the final. Apologies to those of you looking to come up, but we're unable to get it through today.

Porters News - 31st July

31 Jul 2009

Hello Porters crew.

Another week ticks by, and we’re now moving towards the peak season month of August with an average 140cm snow-base. It’s during August when we would normally get some settled weather and some great snow conditions, and the sun sits a little higher in the sky, shining into the Porters basin. We are in the hands of Mother Nature!

A view from the Summit, Sunday 26th July. (C) Karen Platini

It’s also this time when the events start to roll around each week, with fun for everyone, and plenty of different options. Later in this newsletter is a round-up from the weekend events just gone, and some information for upcoming events.

With some snow forecast in the weather system ahead, it’s looking like some great skiing in the near future. Keep an eye on the reports for further information.

From the Mountain

We’ve had a couple of days of moderate wind recently, which have shifted the snow around a bit, leaving firm conditions in places, and really nice wind blown powder in others, you just have to know where to find it! Ask the staff for a tip on where to ski and snowboard. I’ve had several people mention to me that they were lapping T-3 on Tuesday and by the time they were back up the top, their tracks were filled in and it was all on again!

The wind continues today, and with some stronger gusts, the call was made to close the mountain. They are forecast to ease during the day, and we’re confident that we will be open again for tomorrow, Saturday 1st August. We also anticipate some new snow to fall in this system, so keep an eye on the website and make sure you’re ready to go if we do get a powder day!

Snowride Sports Retro Dual Slalom - Results

Last weekend we held the inaugural Snowride Sports Retro Dual Slalom, which saw a range of strange looking outfits come out of the closet and onto the snow. More retro gear than usual at Porters (there’s plenty anyway!), it was a great day of racing and fun for those involved. Big thanks to Richard from Snowride, Murray from Nordica and Fischer, and the Porters Instructors for their assistance. To check out all the results and more photos, click here. Keep your ear to the ground for the next family events – Snow and Surf Big Mama Chinese Downhill coming soon!

Travelling in Alpine environments

Skiing in New Zealand is slightly different from elsewhere in the world. The nature of our ski areas means that access is inevitably via gravel mountain access roads, which vary in quality and difficulty. Here at Porters, we beleive ours is one of the easier access roads, and with a dedicated team looking after the road in the event of a snow-fall, we endeavour to keep our roads as safe and accessible as possible. But there are a few other things you can do which make it even easier! A four wheel drive vehicle is a great start if you spend a bit of time in the alps. Our partners at Miles Toyota have a range of new and used vehicles that are perfectly suited to our alpine environment. They’ll certainly look after you as a Porters Customer, check out the options right here, or click below for more great deals!

The next step is to winterise your vehicle to ensure it can handle the cold temps, and then get some rubber and steel that will make driving on snow and ice easier! A good set of snow specific tires helps with tractions, and all vehicles in alpine environments should carry snow chains, so get you-self a set. Auto City in Christchurch are an accredited Kumho1 dealer, as well as a range of other brands. Call in to see Murray and the team who will get your vehicle all geared up and ready to tackle the mountains. Click the link below for contact details.

Snowride Sports Retro Dual Slalom - Roundup

30 Jul 2009

David Scott from snow.co - maybe put that one back in the closet!

Last weekend there were more fluro and tight suits than usual at Porters. It was of course the first installment of the Snowride Sports Retro Dual Slalom, a head to head battle that was a whole lot of fast, family fun.

Dual slalom - head to head, really fun race style.

It was great to see a good crew of local Porters skiers up on the field and enjoying some racing together. With several divisions, and some quality skiers in the line up, it was always going to be tight. The competition saw three separate re-runs of heats as the skiers crossed the line together - too close for the judges to split!

Results:

Women's Open
1. Stella Hoeper (7 year old open womens champ, yeeha!)
2. Lucy Johnson
3. Friederike Hoeper

Men's Under 18
1. Phillip Hoeper
2. Reuben Godfrey
3. Paul Hoeper/ Harry Fergus

Men' Open
1. Mel Wilcox
2. David Scott
3. Glenn Fergus

I promise i wont wear it again!

Huge thanks to all of you who came along, and to Richard from Snowride Sports, Wordsworth St in Christchurch as well as Murry from Nordica and Fisher. We couldn't hold these events without the support from the industry, so get in and support them instore! Looking forward to another great event next year!

Porters School Holiday Round-up

16 Jul 2009

Hi there.

Well, the sun is beginning to set on the school holidays, just a few days to go…

End of a great day - Luke armstrong

But don’t let that stop you from skiing! There’s still Saturday and Sunday to go this week, and with Porters two for one Mondays, we should all extend our weekend this week, and step back into school or work with a four day week! The snow on the ground is still great, cold temps have helped to keep the snow in good condition, and the clear skies have allowed for some fantastic skiing.

We hope that all of you have enjoyed your time with us these holidays, and are looking forward to the coming weeks of more powder, fun events and friendly skiing. Read on for what’s going on at Porters this week.

From the Mountain

The mountain is looking great. Top to bottom skiing on the two large faces Big Mama and Bluff, and all our main beginner and intermediate runs have superb snow cover and are in awesome condition. It’s been great to talk to you and hear that you’re enjoying yourselves, and I spoke to many people who said they’d enjoyed some good ‘side-country’ access to great snow. Great that we have the ability to do this – please check in with our ski patrollers at the top of T-3 to see if conditions are suitable, and always travel in groups with the right safety equipment. You can check out more info on back-country access at the NZ Mountain Safety Council's website.

A little back-country time - Photo: Luke Armstrong

We’re now staring down the barrel of some more snow, which will be well received. Looks like we may get some overnight Saturday, and the systems passing through at the moment are very fast moving, so we may get some clearing skies and good snow this weekend.

Also make sure you check out the Korean International Snowboard team who’re training up at Porters at the moment. You’ll see them up on T-3 ripping the slopes up, quite impressive to watch, super fast! Come and see the Porters Snowsports school team who will help to get you ripping up the slopes in the same way!

Keep your eye on the reports through the Porters website, we will keep you updated with the latest information from the mountain.

Porters local with some great shots...

14 Jul 2009

Porters local rider Dean Jeffery was stoked to see me at 11am when I was driving up the hill last Saturday. He had just riden from the summit of Big Mama all the way down suger bowl dow to long spur and was walking up. Stoked with a free ride, he promised to send me some shots to show you. Check them out - would have been fun. Cheers Dean.

Porters News - 9th July

9 Jul 2009

Hi, its Guy here, welcome to the school holidays!

Wow – what can I say? The holidays are cranking at Porters! We have had some incredible snow conditions on the mountain, with many a report of the ‘best skiing ever’ coming from the hill. The snow we have received, combined with favourable (cold) temperatures have meant that the quality of the snow is very high, especially for this early in the season. Luke, our operations manager said that 'the skiing does not get much better in this hemisphere than what we have right now. Blue skies and powder!'

A few turns this week - I wish they were mine!

It is usually this time of year when the hype of the ‘start’ of the winter is in full swing, with all the ski areas laying claim to fantastic conditions. It seems that across the range, these claims are more than justified this winter, and many of you are scoring some epic days in the alps.

Read on for further information from the mountain.

From the Mountain

The snow just keeps coming! We are now completely covered and all runs are open. The faces are skiing well, with top to bottom skiing, and many have been taking advantage of the wide range of terrain on offer.

Luke Armstrong - Dawn Tuesday 7th July

We have had some beautiful clear and calm weather conditions, which have allowed many of you to take advantage of the excellent back-country access on offer.
Please ensure that you check in with our Patrollers if you are to exit the ski area boundaries. They know what’s going on in the mountains, and are your best option for gaining the knowledge you need to keep safe. Make sure that you have all the gear you need, and travel together.

Make sure you create a bookmark for our website (www.skiporters.co.nz) to check in on the latest reports, webcams and information from the mountain before you head up.

Powered by Nordica, the inaugural Snowride Sports Retro Dual Slalom (25th/26th July) offers you the chance to measure up to your family members and friends, both in racing and style. Richard from Snowride assures me that his ‘one-piece’ ski-suit is a force to be reckoned with, so clean out the closet, wax up your 210cm GS skis, and come prepared for a showdown! This event is for youths aged 10 to 18 years, as well as open men's and women's categories. Pre registration will begin later next week for the event, check out our events page soon for more information.

Porters Community Park

Well, the last couple weeks have been great for snow. We've had some unreal powder riding, and all the snow helps to keep us pretty busy here in the park, digging things out. But it's good, as it now means that we have plenty of snow for getting the rest of the park cranking.

New kicker on the top terrace in the Community Park

We now have kickers set up on the first terrace and third terraces, the wall-ride is open and we have put the two 4 metre boxes together to make an 8 metre down box.

We're now continuing the process of building the park up over the next couple of weeks towards our Community Park Open Day, for which we'll have a full park line set up, and will also have a casual after lunch jam session, with sponsors product up for grabs. We will look to get a few more features in before the weekend (11/12 July), and will continue to get more happening from there.

Check the Community Park page soon for some more video content from the park.

Morning everyone. A beautiful clear and calm day up at Porters today. Some low fog through the valley this morning which is expected to clear to another fantastic day on the hill. We have some fantastic snow conditions right now on the mountain - come in up and make the most of some of the best school holiday snow conditions in many years.

A view from heaven...

6 Jul 2009

I've just received yet another image from our fantastic and decidedly spoilt Operations Manager Luke, who managed to get the below shot from the mountain first thing this morning (7th July). An absolutely stunning view from the Porters summit. In his email, Luke describes the current conditions as 'awesome with wind-blown powder all over the mountain.' He goes on to say that 'The skiing does not get much better in this hemisphere than what we have right now. Blue skies and powder!' Come on up and see us these holidays to take advantage of the bet conditions we can recall for a number of years.

Another night of cold temperatures, and more precipitous cloud have left the ski area with another coating of fresh snow, with 15cm accumulating overnight. With school holidays in full swing, now is the perfect time to come up and take advantage of the great conditions. We have some excellent kids programmes on these holidays; kids club for the young ones, ski improvement and freeride training for the more adventurous, and race training for the guru's. Clear skies - fresh snow!

2 Jul 2009

Hi, Guy here with your Friday morning update from Porters. It's perfect up here! Cloudy, drizzly and miserable in Christchurch, but up in the mountains it is clear, light winds and 15cm of fresh, light, dry snow! The skiing conditions for the start of the school holidays couldn't be better! Uli reckons it is the best conditions for this time of year he's ever seen, and quoted the snow overnight as '15cm of fresh dry powder. Very low density, this is CANADIAN POWDER!' There really is no excuse, get up and see us, you won't be disappointed.

Also, something new for you all. We have joined up to Twitter, allowing us to keep you up to date with the latest conditions on the hill each day. Uli and Luke will pick this up and leave brief updates for you as they can, which will then display on our home page (see the right hand pane). You can sign up to Twitter and follow us by joining Twitter yourself.

We'll have some more information for you shortly, hope your Friday goes well, keep an eye on the webcams!

Porters News - 2nd July

2 Jul 2009

Hello everyone – it’s Guy here.

An ‘official’ welcome to Big Mama for the 2009 winter season. Big Mama emerged yesterday for the first time this winter after some fresh snowfall allowed the Porters snow-safety team to declare the iconic Porters run ‘ready-for-business’. We’re in the midst of a polar blast at the moment, which is bringing snow to the Craigieburn Range, with more to come this weekend. We’re open, the school holidays are beginning, and it’s looking like a fantastic winter season at Porters.

From the Mountain

The mountain looks fantastic. We opened with fairly firm conditions due to the early snow and subsequent frosts, but after the recent snow-falls this week, it’s all on!

Big Mama is once again open for the school holidays! We have received a good amount of fresh snowfall over the past few days, in addition to snow-making, and the skiing on the mountain is fantastic! Just what we all need leading into the school holidays! Luke Armstrong, Operations Manager is very positive of the skiing right now.

"Conditions are very good at the moment with both piste and off piste skiing well. The forecast snow coming later this week should have us looking very good for this time of year. Our snowmaking is still cranking away, machine-made snow can vary in quality and I have no doubt that the snow we are making now is as good as it gets."

"Both big faces are being skied today. Big mamma is epic up top, and is a little bony at the bottom while Bluff has an average of 10cm of fluff on top of a solid base underneath. The skiing is on up here right now."

It's looking great up on the mountain, so get up and enjoy the snow!

Holiday Programmes

Porters is the perfect place for you and your little ones these holidays. We have great options for your kids to have fun on the snow in a fun and progressive environment. The Porters ‘Kids Club’ offers parents the option to include their 3 to 5 year olds in morning and afternoon lessons (2 hours each) with our excellent Snowsports School instructors. Your kids will ski with others their own age, and will be well looked after by our instructors who will pass on their knowledge and experience. The programme runs every day in the school holidays, as well as every Sunday. A half-day is $40 or $70 for a full day. Check into the Snowsports School office at Porters to find out more and get your kid’s involved.

For the older children, we have a range of training programmes that may be of interest. From race training to ski improvement training, plus free-ride specific coaching, there’s something for everyone. You can read more about the programmes right here.

If you and your family are new to the snow, the Porters Passport is the perfect way for you to get involved and progress your skills. Offering you discounted on mountain packages over a four day (non-consecutive) period, the Passport culminates in a complimentary season pass for 2009 for each person who completes the course! It’s affordable, it’s progressive, it’s fun, and it’s the best option in NZ for first timers. Come see us in the ticket office for more information, or check it out here.

Hello ladies, this is Katharina! Are you a strong intermediate to advanced skier, and want to improve your skiing? Then we have just the thing for you. A two hour lesson every Monday with me as well as another female instructor, with lessons set at a time that gives you the chance to take your kids to school and pick them up in the afternoon. We have a ski test (demo) planned, a day on the race course, plus if weather and conditions allow, a day off-piste with transceiver search and snow science. A shuttle bus will wait for you at 10.30am in the chain fitting area. I'm looking forward seeing you and to have a great time. Drop us a line, you can contact us for more info.

Porters Community Park Open

Alan and the crew at the Porters Community Park worked hard leading up to opening weekend, and have set up a 'mini-park' at the base of T-bar 1. Featuring a range of small jib hits, Alan and the crew will be pushing to get more features in now that more snow has fallen. You can check out the latest from the Porters Community Park here, including a brief video showing the features available (filmed Sat 27th June). More to come soon, come up and check it out. Beautiful Early Season Skiing

28 Jun 2009

Saturday really turned it on at Porters - cool temps kept the snow in cold winter condition, and the sun was out with clear skies and light winds all day. Great to get on the slopes for a few turns, and some great snow up on t-bar three was great, while the great cover ont he beginner and intermediate runs allowed all to take advantage of the great weather. Some images below from Saturday, more for you soon.

Cheers,

Super Saturday

26 Jun 2009

Morning guys! Morning update for Saturday 27th June. It is crisp, calm and clear up at Porters and the forecast is for a great day up the hill today. We received 5 cm of new snow yesterday on top of a solid base, with the best skiing and riding on the main groomed trails.

The grooming staff have been into it overnight, ensuring the trails are in good condition. There are some closures off-piste due to the firm conditions, so please respect all closures. The Community Park crew have a mini park running, so come on up and get into it! See you soon...

Guy.

Opening Day Brings Snow

26 Jun 2009

A great opening day today. Although slightly overcast, the clouds brought some precipitation with 5 cm overnight, and some more during the day today. The word from the man himself, General Manager Uli Dinsenbacher, is that the mountain is looking good with some fresh snow on top of the great base. It was a fantastic opening day, with the weather, temperatures and snow conditions looking great for the weekend.

The new snow we have received has filled in some areas, although there are still some icy patches, particularly in Stella Bowl. The Porters Community Park crew have been on the case, and have managed to get the mini park up and running, which was popular today.

Looking forward to seeing you all up here soon. If you require more information, please check our snow-phone, 03 383 8888, extension 06 or check out our snow report through our website, or through snow.co.nz.

Enjoy your weekend - find some snow!

Porters Set To Open For Winter '09

25 Jun 2009

Kia ora.

After a week of fantastic snow-making temperatures and preparation work on the mountain, the Porters team are all set to go this Friday (26th June) for the opening of the 2009 winter season.

There has been some great early season snow-falls, and we now have an excellent snow-base on the main runs. Recent snow-making has added to the natural base and the skiing and riding on-piste is looking good. Porters’ experienced grooming team have been hard at work consolidating the snow-pack, and ensuring the surface is in premium condition for the start of the season.

Ski area manager Uli Dinsenbacher is excited about the season ahead. “All the staff are raring to go. We have a great base, and conditions are good on the main runs. The skiing on the main groomed run of T3 is good, as well as the intermediate run through McNulty’s basin returning to T1. The beginners, intermediate and T1 area are also looking really good, so we encourage all keen Christchurch skiers and boarders to come up and take advantage of the great early season conditions.”

“Due to some unmarked hazards and firm conditions off-piste, we will have some closures. We hope to open these areas as soon as we can after either a warmer period or when we receive some new snow. We’re hoping to get some more fresh snow from a weather system early next week.”

Porters will open for business this Friday the 26th of June (weather permitting), with all mountain facilities operating, including the Porters free mountain shuttle from the chain fitting bay. Please callor email ahead if you'd like to use the shuttle service so we can ensure that it's there to meet you and get you up the mountain!

The Porters website, www.skiporters.co.nz, has all the info you need before you come to see us at Porters. The latest webcam images, up to the minute reporting on which lifts are open, rates and packages, and much more. Check it out, and we’ll see you soon at Porters!

Cheers,
Guy Nurse.

A blade full of snow-making spoils

23 Jun 2009

Recent cooler temperatures have allowed the Porters snow-making crew to go at it in producing a fair amount of fresh man-made snow on key areas of the lower mountain. As a result, the snow piles up, and then has to be shifted and spread out to cover the slopes evenly. Check out the images below of Chance, one of Porters most experienced groomer operators, sorting out the bulk of snow gathered on the Porters begninner, magic carpet area - thanks for the images Luke.

Porters News - 18th June

20 Jun 2009

Hi it’s Guy here, welcome to Porters 2009 winter season

I hope you’re all set to go for another great winter at Porters. The Porters team appreciate your ongoing support, and can guarantee you a great skiing and snow-boarding experience with us this season. There’s not long to wait now, the season is upon us - read on for the latest information from Christchurch’s favourite ski area...

From the mountain

Uli, Luke and the crew on the mountain have had a busy couple of weeks of late, battling cold temperatures and snow as winter takes hold. As is usual for June, we’ve had a mixed bag of weather, featuring icy cold, snow-bearing southerlies, warmer rain-associated fronts, and some severe frosts. As a result, we have the ideal snow base - solid as! It has set up well, especially on the upper mountain, complemented by our snow-making programme which is pumping day and night.

Working towards our opening date of the 26th of June, our snow-making and operations staff have been taking advantage of cold temperatures to consolidate the base on the main trails. The mercury has dropped as low as -8 degrees some nights. Up-to-the-minute information on latest snow conditions, snowfalls and weather is available through the Porters website and blog. Check out our webcams for a personal virtual tour of the hill.

Porters Community Park 09

Welcome back Katharina - Snow-sports School Director

18 Jun 2009

Our Snowsports School has long been known for its excellence in providing expert tuition to skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Over recent seasons, our team of international instructors have brought the latest techniques and skills to the Snowsports School, teaching every discipline from telemarking to free-riding. This year, back for her third season at Porters, Katharina Klein has been appointed Porters Snowsports School Director. I had a chance to catch up with her back at Porters for a chat on what the plans are for this winter. Check out the video below...

Porters Community Park 09!

16 Jun 2009

As I write this, the snow is falling here at Porters and everyone is amped for an epic season. The crew will have a fresh park setup from the get go and will look to get more and more features in as the snow allows.

Jan Hurka (above) will be returning from Europe and his inclusion in the park will ensure things are kept creative and continue to bring the fun factor to your park experience at Porters.

We are all about the community vibe here at Porters so if theres any questions or suggestions as to what you would like to see in the park this year, feel free to let us know! Drop me a line at with what you'd like to see and we'll see what we can do.

Park Manager,
Alan Lelieveld.

Weekend Weather Update

11 Jun 2009

As mentioned below, the Porters snow making crew are all set up and as the pictures suggest have been cranking out the snow. Warmer temps have limited the snow-making tome in the past few days, but looking toward the weekend, and into next week, we're looking at a colder southerly system, and hopefully some more natural snow. Additionally, with the freezing levels dropping, the snow-making crew will be fired up and into it, continuing to build our snow- base as we move towards opening. A brief report below, check out more weather information here.

Fri Jun 12 - Periods of rain near the Divide. Fine further east at first, but scattered rain spreading southwards during the afternoon and evening. Snow level 1800 metres.
Sat Jun 13 - Cloudy, with rain at times.
Sun Jun 14 - Showers and becoming colder with snow lowering to 1000 metres during the day and 500 metres in the evening. Southerlies.

Check back soon for more information - you can sign up to our weekly newsletters during the winter season on the right hand side of the page, check it out.

Snow-making in full swing

7 Jun 2009

The snow-making team have been getting stuck into their work as the cold temperatures have continued to allow the production of man-made snow recently. With a superb natural snow base, the team have been taking every opportunity to add to the depth. Check out the following images of the snow guns in action and the back-drop of Bluff Face looking like mid-July!

Porters Week-ender - latest newsletter

5 Jun 2009

Welcome to the winter Porters crew! We’re well and truly on the go for winter with severely cold storms passing through regularly, and leaving their mark on the Porters basin. As the snow continues to fall, we’re eagerly anticipating another great winter season at Christchurch’s favourite ski area. Staff training is underway this weekend as this week-ender email goes out, read on for the latest information from Porters.

From the Mountain

As you can see, the snow has arrived, and with a combination of some precipitation, cold temperatures, and some good work from the Porters maintenance crew, we now have a solid base to build on for the start of the season. It’s all go up here at the moment, staff have arrived and are in set up mode for the ski area and a planned opening date of 26th June 2009. There’s more snow coming over the next day or so, followed by more cold temperatures, so we’ll be making snow as we can, adding to the existing base. Keep track with the latest information from the mountain through our website, www.skiporters.co.nz.

Porters Training Academy 2009 – by Sophie Dinsenbacher

Porters offers a fantastic range of programmes running in the holidays and on Sundays, this is a great way for your kids to ski in a team, have fun and improve their skills!

There are three options for skiing. The Junior Improvement programme concentrates on the fundamentals of skiing, incorporating safety, fun and learning.  This is a great way of getting your children to improve their skiing technique while being involved with a team of skiers they can ski with for years to come!  Skiers should be aged 5-11, ski at an intermediate level and love skiing!

The Freeride Team is designed for all those kids who can get a thrill out of a big dump of snow and want to learn how to ride powder as well as all other snow conditions. Incorporated into this programme is an Avalanche Awareness Clinic, tips on becoming responsible skiers as well as improving technique and tricks in the park. The freeride team runs for 8 Sundays, starting on the 19th of July and finishing up on the 20th of September (excluding August 16th and 23rd) for $240. Five optional days during the July holidays is available for $150. Skiers should be strong parallel skiers who can confidently ski the majority of the mountain and would like to learn some new tricks!

PHAST – Porters Alipne Ski Team offers high end professional coaching focusing on alpine ski racing. Coaches use a combination of advancing technical ability, strategy, gate training and freeskiing with the objective of competing in ski races throughout the South Island. There are two teams, based on age and ability, the Senior Race Team will run on Saturday and Sunday, plus two weeks in the July Holidays. The Junior Team will run on Sundays only, plus two weeks in the July holidays for just $30 per day. Skiers should be strong all mountain skiers with a passion for ski racing!

Porters also offer a Snowboard Team, with four or more applicants, this will consist of learning freeride techniques for all snow conditions, basic riding  technique and tricks in the park. This is usually a small group so it’s a great way to get some professional feedback!

Don’t miss out on these great programmes – spaces are filling fast. Space is still available for the second week of the school holidays - book online today!

Interchangable Parent Day Pass

As Porters is such a fantastic spot for families to enjoy their skiing, we think it’s only fair that we look after you all. This year, we’ve decided to make it easier for those parents with little ones who require assistance during their ski day. We now offer an interchangeable parent’s pass for those with toddlers still at preschool. Here’s how it works; come into the ticket office with your preschooler and both parents, and we’ll issue you with two day passes, one for each parent, so that each of you can take it in turns watching/assisting your young ones. Conditions apply – check with the Porters ticketing staff for more information.

Miles Toyota

The team at Miles are back on board with Porters this year, and supply rugged mountain vehicles, perfect for an alpine environment such as ours. They come strongly recommended by the Porters crew, and are the perfect option if you’re in need of a new vehicle. The Miles team can also service your car and get it ‘winter-fied’, ensuring that it is running smoothly and is safe on the road. Check out the link below for more information and the latest offers from Toyota.

Well, that’s it from us this week. Like you, we’re looking forward to the start of the winter season at Porters, and are putting the finishing touches to getting things sorted for the winter. We’ll keep you posted with the latest information via these newsletters and through our website. We look forward to seeing you here soon.

Big Mama awakens from her slumber

3 Jun 2009

With only a few weeks until our scheduled opening, we're stoked to see the snow begin to fill in to our crown jewell - the 620m vertical Big Mama. Some great shots taken below by Luke our Ops manager.

Beautiful clear frosty day

1 Jun 2009

The winter is with us! Some very cold temps and some more snow has fallen with the latest cold snap to hit the country. These images below taken in the aftermath as the weather cleared and frosts fell!

Getting set-up for a great winter!

28 May 2009

Well, the snow has now set, and left us with a good solid base to start from as we move into June. Following some rain, we had some cold temps which have locked the base in, and we're looking down the barrel of another cold system over the next three days which hopefully will bring more snow! Bekow are the latest shots from Luke Armstrong, Operations Manager on the hill for your viewing pleasure! Take care.

Latest From The Mountain

21 May 2009

We've had some more fantastic cold weather this week, bringing more snow to the Craigieburn Range, and even a dusting on the Port Hills in Christchurch! You can always be sure that the snow is falling when the Christchurch maximum temperature only hits 5 degrees celcius! We'll have some more imagery from the mountain shortly as it's available.

Some great news from the Porters Snow-sports School - this year we welcome back Katerina, our super talented and experienced Ski Instructor as Snow-sports director for 2009. Katerina runs a snow school back in her home-land of Germany, but now as a Porters local, brings her experience and expertise to you on the closest slopes to Christchurch City! Be sure to talk to her when next on the mountain to see how the Porters instructors can assist in improving your technique in an easy and fun environment.

Also lining up for this season are the ever popular Porters Training Programmes for those looking to take their sport to the next level. There are a range of options depending on the age, dicipline and ability of your child or high school student, but all offer a fantastic platform for them to progress in a team-like environment. There are race programmes, ski improvement training, free-ride and free-style skiing, and snowboard improvement programmes (minimum numbers apply). All the programmes are based over a number of Sunday sessions throughout the winter, and also have available similar sessions that run over a week during the school holidays. If you think that you or your child might be interested, drop us a line and we'll be happy to talk to you on how we can assist in progressing skills and having fun!

We're hoping that the snow keeps falling, and are anticipating opening the mountain as planned mid to late June. We'll keep you posted through these blogs and our newsletters (sign up in right hand side-bar) of any further changes.

Super Savage Southerly

19 May 2009

Hi guys, hope that everyone is wrapped up warmly and not feeling the bite of winter too badly! As I write this message, the Southerly storm rages outside, drenching Christchurch city, and dropping fresh snow onto the alps and getting winter snow enthusiasts excited!

Regular snow falls and cold southerly systems have been treating us this winter, dumping unusually large volumes of snow for this time of the year. In spite of this, snowmaking is all set to get underway in two weeks time. With good coverage at this point, we are well on target for a mid to late of June opening of the ski area. Keep your eyes on this blog as we update it with the latest from the mountain, latest images of the snow conditions, and keep you informed via our newsletters - sign up in the side-bar to the right!

Most likely, we'll have more imagery with another blog here tomorrow! See you then.

Wild Weather Weekend

10 May 2009

The cold and stormy weather systems continued over the weekend, with a further 30cms of snow at the carpark level this morning to greet Operartions Manager Luke Armstrong. With such cold temps, and so much snow on the ground, things are looking good at this stage for a great start to the winter season. We aniticipate opening the ski area from the 26th of June this year.

Check out the images below, taken Monday 11th May of Porters in fine form. Keep it coming!

Storm Dumping Snow at Porters

6 May 2009

It has been a stormy few days up the mountain, with plenty of early season snow lashing the Porters basin and surrounding peaks. Those who have already purchased a season pass for the winter will be happy with the decision as several snow-falls have already turned the mountain white, and the ground temperatures are dropping.

Ski Area Operations Manager, Luke Armstrong has today sent through some magnificent shots illustrating the depth of snow that has fallen - with 40-50cm on the lower mountain and possible as much as 70cm on the upper mountain. Check out the images below...

Stand by for more information from the mountain as the storm continues overnight tonight!

Season Passes Two Day Lay-over

1 May 2009

For those of you who had any issues with your season pass applications, we're leaving our system as is over the weekend so you're able to complete your transaction. We had some technical issues earlier in the month, managed to iron out the issues, but due to some hi traffic volumes over the last few days of the pass sales, some of you had some issues in completing your purchase.

In light of this, a weekend lay-over will occur, and we'll be updating the e-shop next week. If you have any further queries, please contact us and we'll be sure to help you out. Please ensure that when uploading your photo's onto each pass, that file sizes are kept below 50kb, this will allow the system to run smoothly for the addition of each pass to your order.

Thanks for your patience over this busy time - like you we're excited to see he temperature dropping! Bring on the winter!

Season pass prices out now & on sale soon!

18 Feb 2009

Season pass pricing for this year remains unchanged from last year, with the superb deals up for grabs until the 30th of April.

Porters early passes remain some of the most affordable in the market – an adult full-access season pass is just $449 , with mid-week adult passes costing only $249 ! Students are also well looked after, with midweek student passes just $99 – hands down the best option for students looking to duck away after their morning lecture.

In addition to the season pass pricing, all the rates remain the same for 2009, helping to ensure that skiing and snowboarding remain an affordable option for all Canterbury snow-sports enthusiasts. Ski area manager, Uli Dinsenbacher, is excited as usual about the upcoming winter season.

“We are in the process of finalising an exciting 20 year plan this summer, which will allow us to focus on the key improvements to benefit our valued customers,” says Dinsenbacher. “Recent developments in the ski area and its operation have been well received by our customers, and we want to continue to improve the Porters snow experience.”

The Porters Passport, established at the ski area in 2007, offers first time skiers and boarders an unbeatable platform for ensuring their progression in the sport, right from word go. The concept gives participants in the programme half price packages on the mountain inclusive of rental and lessons over a four day period (consecutive or otherwise), and culminates in a free season pass for the balance of the 2009 winter season.

Building the accessibility for everyone, Porters are looking to maintain and develop their partnership with Atomic Shuttles in continuing the great value return shuttle package from Christchurch, which utilises the Porters free mountain road shuttle, available to all Porters customers from the chain fitting area.

The Porters Community Park, established in 2008 and proving to be hugely popular,  is a key priority for Porters management and operations staff. As the name suggests, it’s all about the community, with a range of features for beginner and intermediate terrain park users to enjoy, and plenty of options for the more experienced riders to get technical on.

The famous Porters ‘two for one’ Mondays are back once again for 2009 giving you the perfect opportunity extend you weekend. There are also some new additions for the up-coming winter including an interchangable parent pass for those parents with a young child to look after, specialised womens alpine clinic, masters racing (dates TBC), plus the development of Porters two and three day multi-day deals.
